Typically, a man abducts his bride by force or deception, enlisting his family to break her resistance to the wedding through hours of persuasion. The Kyrgyz phrase ala kachuu describes this process — literally, it means “grab and run”. Some brides are kidnapped by strangers, others by men they know. Some escape after violent ordeals, but most are persuaded to stay by tradition and fear of scandal. In Muslim Kyrgyzstan , where virginity is revered, a girl who has been kidnapped and then leaves is considered to be tainted. If her family refuses to allow her back home because of the shame, she has few options. Although the practice is said to have its roots in nomadic customs, the tradition remains at odds with modern Kyrgyzstan. Ala kachuu was outlawed during the Soviet era and remains illegal under the Kyrgyz criminal code, but since the country’s declaration of independence in , incidents have surged. But also, in this religious country, there are few opportunities for single men and women to meet and socialise. An animal is slaughtered and celebrations can last up to a month.

In the mountains, you can meet the modern nomads who do not change their lifestyle for centuries. Their simple life can go into the yurt, a felt house that Kyrgyz nomads set so skillfully and decorate it with such love by multi-colored carpets.

In most cases, the young woman is raped immediately in the name of marriage. Although the practice is illegal in Kyrgyzstan, bride kidnappers are rarely prosecuted. This reluctance to enforce the code is in part caused by the corrupt legal system in Kyrgyzstan where many villages are de facto ruled by councils of elders and aqsaqal courts following customary law , away from the eyes of the state legal system. Kyrgyzstan’s landscape of high, forested mountains and lush, grassy steppes attracted Silk Roads travelers by its cool climate, sparkling lakes and green valleys after passing perilous, exhausting and arduous western Chinese deserts.
These regions on the main Silk Roads are rich in the ruins of entire cities, trading towns and caravanserais of the Turks, Kyrgyz, Sogdians and other ancient travelers, as well as places linked to the spread of religions such as Zoroastrianism, Buddhist, Christianity and Islam. Beside the Silk Roads sites and stunning natural beauty, the Silk Roads customs and culture are still alive in Kyrgyzstan in a way that there are still several nomad tribes who live in felt yurts out on the steppes.
The Great Silk Roads glow in the imagination as the world’s richest exchange of trade and culture. Caravans of camels, men and horses bore lazurite, silver and spices across thousands of kilometers, but the unseen interaction of ideas and religions was perhaps its greatest glory: enlightening civilizations from Beijing to Rome.
CUSTOMS AND ETIQUETTE IN KYRGYZSTAN
As we evolve into a more digital age, where information is shared in the blink of an eye, the mysteriousness of destinations around the world begins to shrink. We plan our trips on blogs and get inspired on Instagram , and we often know quite a bit about a place before we ever step foot off the plane there. While I did some planning and research before I flew halfway around the world to Central Asia, I avoided looking at visual sites and limited my serious planner side, hoping to be surprised.
But not anymore.

The system would track licenses and sanitation inspections, facilitating the smooth shipment of goods to neighboring countries.
But more than four years later, all Kyrgyzstan has to show for the effort is an ineffective customs database, several scathing investigations of the procurement process, and languishing criminal cases against the official in charge, Ernis Mamyrkanov. The one-time deputy minister of transportation and communication fled Kyrgyzstan following allegations of misspending and irregularities in the purchasing contracts.
The documents also show that the ministry purchased the wrong equipment and software at inflated prices, sometimes from companies with non-transparent ownership structures. Mamyrkanov did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Mamyrkanov previously worked in journalism, and once advised the government on implementing a nationwide digital television system that missed its planned launch date by two years.
He was tapped to oversee the ambitious IT project to set up the common customs database only six months after his ministerial appointment. In describing the initiative to reporters in October , Mamyrkanov said the system would be up and running by mid The group also hired an auditor to review the prices of the equipment Mamyrkanov purchased. The details were not made public, but the internal report concluded that the contracts were inflated by approximately 20 percent, according to a government source, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation.
The investigation found significant problems with the technological specifications of the purchased equipment. For example, Mamyrkanov ordered equipment from a company called RRC Central Asia, which provided hardware with encryption that was specific to neighboring Kazakhstan and not authorized in Kyrgyzstan, making it unusable.

This is an evil practice, one that has exploited females for far too long! Just because it is an accepted custom does not make it right or something to be studied as part of their tradition. Traditions like this should have been banned years ago as barbaric.
Women cannot be taken seriously as part of a community as long as they continue to allow and to go along with this kind of thing. These mothers need to stand up and fight this; they should not be the ones trying to get some poor girl to wear a “wedding scarf”! I was horrified and yet fascinated. These poor women; they have virtually no say in their life, unless they refuse to stay. Once again I am reminded how very good women in America really have it compared with the rest of the world.
