From the History of
Basketball
Basketball as a game appeared at the
end of the 19th century.
It was introduced by one college coach
during the winter of 1891—1892.
He wanted to train his students
between the end of the footbal season
and the beginning of the basebal
season.
He placed baskets on the walls at
the opposite ends of the gymnasium
and organized ninemen teams who
played with a ball.
Each team tried to throw the ball into
the other team’s basket and at the
same time tried to keep that team from
throwing the ball into their basket.
The students had a lot of exercise,
they moved a lot about the
gymnasium, jumped and ran.
They liked the game and called it bas
ketball.
Today the game is the same but there
are some changes in it.
Now there are five players in a team.
This game is very popular in Europe.
This game can be played indoors and
outdoors.

З історії баскетболу

Баскетбол як гра з’явився наприкін
ці 19го століття.
Його придумав спортивний тренер
коледжу узимку 1891—1892 р.
Він хотів тренувати своїх студентів
у проміжку між закінченням фут
больного і початком бейсбольного
сезонів.
Він прикріпив кошики на стінах
у протилежних кінцях спортивного
залу і зібрав команди по дев’ять чо
ловік, що грали з м’ячем.
Кожна команда намагалася закида
ти м’яч у кошик суперників і в той же
час не дати закидати м’яч у власний
кошик.
Студенти добре розминалися, вони
багато рухалися по залі, стрибали
і бігали.
Вони дуже полюбили цю гру
і назвали її баскетбол.
Зараз гра залишилася такою ж, але
в ній з’явились деякі зміни.
Зараз у команді п’ять гравців.
Ця гра дуже популярна в Європі.
У неї можна грати й у приміщенні,
і на вулиці.
